Dr. David Farberow graduated from Illinois College of Optometry in 1980. David first moved to Santa Cruz in 1974, after graduating from UCLA with a BA in psychology in 1972.
After several years of working locally for other doctors, he bought a satellite office in 1983 from a doctor in Gilroy and began a private practice on 41st Ave. After 12 years at that location, he and Dr. Simmons opened Plaza Lane Optometry in downtown Santa Cruz on Pacific Avenue.

He has continued the tradition of serving the community and those less fortunate through his involvement with the Doran Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. He has held the position of president and has served on this organization’s board as well.

Dr. Curt Simmons
Dr. Simmons is a fourth-generation Californian. He was raised in Riverside and attended the University of California at Riverside, where he received a degree in Biology in 1977. He continued his studies at the University of California at Berkeley where received his doctor of optometry degree in 1982. He wrote his doctoral thesis on oxygen transmission through gas permeable contact lenses. Immediately after graduation he accepted a position as staff optometrist at the Eye Medical Center in Fresno and spent five years managing the visual needs of pre and post-surgical patients.
In 1987, Dr. Simmons and his family relocated to Santa Cruz, establishing a solo practice downtown. While establishing his practice, Dr. Simmons became the consulting optometrist with the Doran Low Vision Resource Center, now the Vista Center. After 8 years of practice, Dr. Simmons outgrew his office space and began searching for a new location. A vacant lot on Pacific Avenue created by the devastating earthquake of 1989 proved to be the perfect solution. Joining with Dr. David Farberow from Capitola, he opened Plaza Lane Optometry in 1995.
Dr. Simmons has been pleased to be an active member of the Santa Cruz community for the past thirty years. He is past president of the Santa Cruz Kiwanis Club, past member of the Board of Directors of Shakespeare Santa Cruz and of the Santa Cruz Downtown Association. He is past president of the Monterey Bay Optometric Society and is currently serving on the Board Chair of of the Friends of Santa Cruz County State Parks. Dr. Simmons is an avid cyclist, enjoys spending his free time with his family, hiking, snowboarding, playing guitar and relaxing in the beautiful Sierra Nevada.
