Services Services: Refractive Surgery Comanagement Over the past several years, there has been a tremendous increase in the public interest in LASIK surgery for nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness. Improvements in surgical skill and advances in technology have brought us to the point where we now recommend refractive surgery to our patients who desire an alternative to spectacles or contact lenses, and who are good candidates for such treatment. You will see compelling advertising, which is meant to convince you that "because the laser does the surgery," skill and experience are not critically important to safely perform these procedures. Nothing could be further from the truth. The skill of the surgeon and surgical team has a great deal to do with the risk of post-surgical complications. We have been working for several years now with the Horizon Vision Center in San Jose. The surgeons and surgical teams there are some of the most experienced and well respected in the country. The surgery itself takes only a few minutes per eye. There is little or no discomfort involved. Many of our patients return to work the day following surgery.
